What could be more fun than running an ice cream shop in the summer? Not much, says owner Nicole Roy, who bought YDB Scoops with her parents in 2007. “It’s turned into a fun and awesome little business that supports my family.”
Nicole Roy owns YDB Scoops in Yorkton. Several years ago, Nicole and her partner Bruce Benneke transitioned into making homemade ice cream and non-dairy fruit sorbets. They rotate between up to twenty-five ice cream flavours. Standard picks include Box of Crayons (five flavours and colours), Saskatoon Cheesecake, Butter Beer, and Minion (banana ice cream with blue raspberry swirl and a white chocolate eyeball on top). They love experimenting with new creations, like dill pickle, maple bacon, peach jalapeño, and mango habanero.
The sky blue and pink building is over a century old and an iconic reminder of Yorkton’s past. It was once the office for the Doukhobor settlers’ brickyard. Many older buildings in Yorkton still have those original bricks. “The building has a history. It’s one of the oldest buildings left in town,” says Nicole.
The building was a service station for years and even a fruit stand, but today it’s reminiscent of an ice cream cone. After a bad flood in 2010 destroyed the paint, Nicole chose the sky blue and pink colour scheme to match the fun atmosphere she provides her customers and staff. Madison Blackstone, a local artist, painted whimsical murals on the building’s walls.
If sweets aren’t your thing, there’s a small hot-food menu. Nicole’s taco in a bag is the best in town, thanks to a secret recipe and fresh ingredients.
Nicole also makes custom ice cream cakes; order in advance.
